Montana Boat Registration

After purchasing a boat, the buyer will have 40 days to transfer ownership and register the vessel.[1] Sailboats and all motorized watercraft must be registered and titled with the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).[2]

Sailboats less than 12 feet in length don’t require registration.

The following documents are required to register and title a boat:

  1. Application for Vessel Certificate of Title (Form MV1A)
  2. Boat Bill of Sale (must be notarized) or current registration receipt[3]
  3. Certificate of Title (assigned to the buyer)[4]

After obtaining and completing the above documents, the owner must file them at a County Treasurer’s Office with payment for registration and titling fees.
