Ohio Vehicle Registration (4 Steps)

1. Emissions Test (If Applicable)

Before registration, residents of Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, and Summit counties must take an emissions test for their vehicle at an E-Check testing site if it’s between 4 and 25 years old at the time of purchase.[1]

2. Transfer Vehicle Title

The buyer will need to obtain the vehicle’s Certificate of Title from the seller, who must sign it over to the buyer.[2] Once the document is in the buyer’s hands they must submit it to the title office and apply for a new title within 30 days of the purchase date.[3]

3. Bring Necessary Documents to Local Deputy Registrar

Once the above steps have been completed, the buyer must bring the following paperwork and payment to their local deputy registrar agency to apply for registration and title[4]:

  • Ohio driver’s license
  • Certificate of Title
  • Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale (if no title is available)
  • Proof of emissions inspection (if applicable)
  • Proof of Ohio vehicle insurance
  • Tax ID if the title is in a business’s name
  • Payment for applicable fees and taxes

If the buyer wishes to transfer an existing registration, they must make their application within 30 days of purchase.[5]

4. Registration Plates & Stickers

After the buyer’s application has been accepted, they will be given new registration plates and stickers to put on their vehicle. In the meantime, they may apply for temporary registration and operate the vehicle using a notarized Certificate of Title or Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale as proof of ownership.[6]
