An Ohio motor vehicle bill of sale is a proof of purchase for the sale of motor vehicle that is signed by the buyer and seller. Once completed, the document will include the vehicle’s purchase price, manufacturer, make, model, and vehicle information number (VIN), as well as the contact information and signatures of both parties. Executing a bill of sale can protect both parties from certain liabilities by proving that the full payment was paid by the buyer and the vehicle’s ownership was transferred between the parties.

Ohio Vehicle Registration

After purchasing a vehicle in a private sale in Ohio, individuals will need to follow the below steps to register the vehicle in their name. Residents of Cuyahoga County, Geauga County, Lake County, Lorain County, Medina County, Portage County, and Summit County must also have must also take an emissions test for their vehicle at an E-Check testing site prior to registration.

  1. Obtain the vehicle’s Certificate of Title from the seller, who must complete and sign over the title to the buyer in the presence of a notary public. The notary must provide their signature and notary seal.
  2. Bring the following paperwork and payment to their local deputy registrar agency:
    • Ohio driver’s license
    • Certificate of Title (must be notarized)
    • Proof of emissions inspection (if applicable)
    • Proof of Ohio vehicle insurance
    • Payment for applicable fees and taxes
  3. Receive temporary registration permit and stickers.
