Demanding the Return of Personal Property
Before sending a demand letter for the return of personal property, efforts should be made to resolve the issue civilly without making threats or demands. If the rightful owner is unsuccessful after making multiple requests, they may draft a letter for the return of their belongings.
The demand letter threatens legal action, which will usually be a civil lawsuit. However, if the items were stolen, a police report can be filed. For more serious cases, attorney consultation may be advisable.
Generally, the rightful owner will need proof of ownership for their case to be enforceable, such as a receipt, bill of sale, bank statement, title, or other pertinent documentation.
