When to Use UUMV Demand Letter

A UUMV demand letter is used when a car, boat, plane, or other motor vehicle is loaned to someone who then fails to return it as agreed. In certain Texas counties, sending a UUMV demand letter is required before reporting a vehicle as stolen.[1]

Demand Process

  1. Complete a UUMV Demand Letter. The letter must include a:
    • Vehicle description (make, model, color, VIN, etc.).
    • Return deadline, which must be within 10 days of receipt of the letter.
    • Specific address for returning the vehicle.
  2. Send the UUMV demand letter to the offender by certified mail.
  3. If the vehicle isn’t returned within 10 days, report the crime to a law enforcement agency.
