How to Write-Up an Employee
The following protocol can be followed if an employee repeatedly has issues with attendance, behavior, performance, or other work-related matters.
- Evaluate situation. Before beginning the write-up process, examine the incident objectively to determine whether a write-up is warranted or if a warning will suffice.
- Review policy. Referring to the company policy will provide a consistent basis for the write-up, identifying the specific rules violated and the corresponding procedure.
- Gather documentation. Any records or testimonies of the incident should be collected to support the write-up.
- Prepare write-up. The write-up form should specify what the employee did wrong, the corrective actions they must take, and any disciplinary measures that will follow.
- Inform employee. The employee should receive and sign the write-up form. The supervisor should maintain a copy of the form in their records.
