Writing Up an Employee
Employers generally write up an employee as follows:
- Evaluate situation. The incident is examined objectively to determine whether a write-up is warranted or if a warning will suffice.
- Review policy. Supervisors will then refer to company policy to identify the specific rules violated and the corresponding procedure.
- Gather documentation. Any records or testimonies of the incident are collected.
- Prepare write-up. The document is drafted to specify what the employee did wrong, the corrective actions they must take, and any disciplinary measures that will follow.
- Acknowledgment. The employee signs the form to confirm they received it and understand its contents. The document is then filed in the company records for future reference.
