Writing Up an Employee

Employers generally write up an employee as follows:

  1. Evaluate situation. The incident is examined objectively to determine whether a write-up is warranted or if a warning will suffice.
  2. Review policy. Supervisors will then refer to company policy to identify the specific rules violated and the corresponding procedure.
  3. Gather documentation. Any records or testimonies of the incident are collected.
  4. Prepare write-up. The document is drafted to specify what the employee did wrong, the corrective actions they must take, and any disciplinary measures that will follow.
  5. Acknowledgment. The employee signs the form to confirm they received it and understand its contents. The document is then filed in the company records for future reference.
