How to Write

A letter of intent should demonstrate the applicant’s qualifications and enthusiasm, and explain why the internship position could help them fulfill their long-term goals.

Personal Information – The applicant must include the date, their name, and their address in the top-left portion of the letter, followed by the name and address of the recipient.

IntroductionThe first paragraph should introduce the applicant and express their commitment to the internship. It may also outline their educational pursuits or recent accomplishments.

Body – In one to two paragraphs, applicants should summarize academic experiences, work history, goals, and skills. It’s recommended to demonstrate knowledge of the company and how the internship would be mutually beneficial.

Conclusion – The letter should finish by restating the applicant’s eagerness, expressing gratitude for the recipient’s time, and stating how the applicant can be reached for a follow-up discussion.

Salutation – A letter of intent must be closed with a formal salutation, such as “Sincerely,” “Regards,” or “Respectfully.” If the letter is printed, a handwritten signature will be required.

Writing Tips

The below tips should be kept in mind when writing an internship letter of intent:

  1. The letter shouldn’t restate information already in the applicant’s resume, and should instead elaborate on how their background aligns with the company’s objectives.
  2. Companies will want to know what motivates and challenges the applicant.
  3. Applicants should mention any relevant groups or activities they’ve participated in.
  4. If the applicant values certain aspects of the company or its internship program, they should express this information in the letter.
  5. A letter of intent should demonstrate the applicant’s desire for the position and excitement at advancing their education as an intern.

Addressing the Letter

Instead of addressing the letter to a general department, it’s best to address it to the hiring manager or the person responsible for evaluating internship applications. Additionally, titles like “Mr.” or “Mrs.” should be avoided if the recipient’s gender is unknown.
