A Massachusetts notary acknowledgment is used to confirm the legitimacy of a signature on a legal document. A notary acknowledgment verifies that the signer personally appeared before a notary public, proved their identity, and willingly provided their signature on the document. The form must be filled out to include the acknowledgment information (location, date, signer’s name) and the notary’s signature, seal, and commission expiration date.
A notary public can perform notarial acts for 7 years before they’re required to renew their commission (MGL ch. 222, § 14).
Is Online Notarization Legal in Massachusetts?
No. However, Massachusetts recognizes notarial acts performed by notaries from other states. Consequently, an online notarial act performed in a state that allows remote online notarization (RON) will be considered legitimate and enforceable in Massachusetts.
