A Missouri notary acknowledgment is a statement attached to a document to authenticate its signatures. It affirms that the signer understood the document they signed, that they signed it willingly, and that the notary public confirmed their identity. These forms are often used to prevent the forgery of important legal documents, like business agreements and powers of attorney.
In Missouri, a notary is allowed to carry out notarial acts for a term of 4 years (§ 486.610(1)).
Is Online Notarization Legal in Missouri?
Yes. With the passing of House Bill 1655, effective August 28, 2020, it became legal for Missouri notaries to notarize documents remotely using electronic communication software.
Note: Online notarial acts can only be performed by notaries who’ve registered with the Secretary of State and completed a training course (see step-by-step guide for instructions).
Statutes: Mo. Rev. Stat. §§ 486.1100 – 486.1250
