Release of Liability – The seller must submit this to the DMV within five days of delivering the vehicle to the new owner.[1]

Idaho Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)

Within 30 days of the sale, the certificate of title must be transferred to the new owner.[2] The vehicle must be titled before it can be registered and a late filing fee will be imposed if this occurs after the 30-day deadline.[3]

1. Gather Documents

The new owner must acquire the following documents before submitting to the DMV[4]:

  • Bill of Sale
  • Title – Must be assigned to the new owner by the previous owner and, in many cases, must include the odometer reading.
  • Vehicle Identification Number Inspection Certification – This inspection can be done by a DMV employee, law enforcement officer, military police officer, or an Idaho licensed vehicle dealer and must be done before the vehicle can be registered or titled.

2. Determine Fees

The individual registering the vehicle must be prepared to pay taxes and registration/titling fees. This registration estimator can help estimate what will need to be paid beforehand.

3. File with the DMV

The new owner should present themselves at a local DMV office with their driver’s license and file the above-mentioned documents. Individuals with out-of-state identification will also need to bring either their SSN or their individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN).[5]
