New York Concealed Carry
New York State
All individuals are legally required to have a valid license to carry a concealed handgun. Out-of-state concealed carry licenses are not recognized. Applicants must be residents of New York and at least 21 years old.[4]Individuals must complete at least 16 hours of in-person classroom training and 2 hours of live-fire training before a license will be issued.[5]
To obtain a concealed carry license, individuals will need to[6]:
- Complete the State of New York Pistol/Revolver License Application (PPB-3).
- Attach a photo taken within the previous 30 days of the applicant.[7]
- Submit the application to the police or sheriff’s department for the county in which the person is a resident or has a place of business.
- Wait for the application to be processed, which may take up to six months.[8]
New York City
The NYPD issues licenses and permits in NYC, and applications must be submitted online.[9] Individuals must sign into the online portal, follow the on-screen instructions, and upload the required documents.
The NYPD License Division will contact the applicant to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting and paying the fees. Applicants will be informed within six months if they are approved for the license.
