Florida Boat Registration
It is mandatory to register and title any boat in Florida that is powered by an engine or is over 16 feet long.[1] A notable exception to this rule is for vessels used, stored, and operated on private ponds and lakes.
Titling and registration occur simultaneously, with the owner bringing the appropriate documents to a Florida tax collector or license plate agent. Boat owners must bring the following to the collector or agent:
- Title – Transferred from seller to buyer and required to transfer ownership.
- Proof of Ownership – Individuals may prove ownership via the bill of sale, a builder’s contract, a federal marine document, etc.
- Fees – Owners should be prepared to pay the required registration and titling fees.
Individuals purchasing a boat will have 30 days to register and title their new vessel and must keep a proof of date of purchase on board during that time.
