Title AssignmentAfter purchasing a vehicle, the certificate of title must be signed over to the buyer from the previous owner. The requirements for transferring the title are as follows:
If the title lacks space for odometer disclosure, the parties must complete a Bill of Sale. 2. Requirements for New Residents (if applicable)New residents of Montana must submit a Request for Foreign Title Transfer to the department of the state/county where the vehicle is currently registered. The foreign department will then release the title to the County Treasurer’s office.
New residents have 60 days to register their vehicles after moving to Montana.[4]
3. Vehicle RegistrationWhen ready to register, the vehicle owner must submit the following to the County Treasurer’s office in their county:
Montana Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – If needed, this document can be used to have a third party register a vehicle in the owner’s name.
4. Pick Up PlatesAfter registering the vehicle, the buyer must wait around 30 days for their new license plates to be available for pickup at the County Treasurer’s office.
