Tennessee Vehicle Registration (3 steps)

1. Registration Documents

New owners need the documents below to title and register their vehicle[1]:

  • Certificate of Title – Signed by the seller.
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (if applicable) – Must be submitted if the vehicle’s model is 2011 or newer.
  • Proof of Residency – An accepted proof of identification and residency must be presented.
  • Current Registration – If transferring plates.

2. Submit Documents

The documents can be brought to the County Clerk’s Office to register and title the vehicle. The new owner must pay the registration and titling fees and sales tax at the office. (Fees may vary from county-to-county). The sales tax can be calculated online beforehand.

3. Obtain Insurance

A driver operating an uninsured motor vehicle risks being fined and losing their registration. The insurance must meet the state’s minimum requirements for liability insurance.
