The Utah motor vehicle bill of sale is the official receipt provided by the Utah State Tax Commission to serve as proof of the purchase and sale of a vehicle. When accompanied by the vehicle’s title, a bill of sale also proves to the DMV that ownership has been legally transferred from the seller to the buyer. This form contains all the necessary vehicle information, the names of the buyer and seller, the purchase price, and the date of the sale. The purchase price on the bill of sale can be used by the buyer when calculating the sales tax for titling and registration purposes.
Utah Vehicle Registration
The buyer of a vehicle through private sale will have to register the vehicle so they may drive it legally. Before they can register it, the seller must hand over the title of the vehicle. This transfers ownership from the seller to the buyer. Utah law requires sellers to provide the title to the buyer within forty-eight (48) hours of the sale; however, the buyer should insist that they obtain the title at the same time as the bill of sale to simplify the process. After they have the title and the bill of sale, the buyer can complete the following steps to register their vehicle:
- Visit DMV office in their county.
- Bring the title (signed by the seller), Utah driver’s license, proof of car insurance, proof of passing inspection, and the bill of sale (not required in all counties).
- Pay the $6 TOP fee as well as the appropriate registration fees (varies by county and by vehicle type, weight, and other factors).
