An onboarding checklist is a guide for managers and HR professionals that organizes the steps necessary when hiring and integrating a new employee. A new hire checklist ensures that required paperwork is completed, that the employee is given resources to understand their role and company policies, and that they can begin working with the rest of the staff.

Benefits of Successful Onboarding

  • Enhanced company culture
  • Increased engagement and productivity
  • Talent attraction

What to Include

Pre-boarding Tasks

This checklist section will detail what needs to be completed before the new staff member’s first day of work. This may include obtaining the new hire’s job acceptance form, confirming their start date, and sending them a welcome email.

Paperwork

A list of the paperwork for a new hire will usually include:

Technology and Workspace

This section details the tasks needed to ensure the employee has all the necessary tools to begin work. These may include setting up email accounts, procuring devices and equipment, and providing necessary software.

Orientation and Employee’s First Day

On their first day, common tasks include providing the new hire with their credentials and security assets, introducing them to colleagues, and touring the office. It might also involve reviewing company policies, going over the benefits package, and assigning a peer mentor.

Check-in

The final section of a new hire checklist is about checking in with the employee. This gives the employee a chance to give feedback regarding their orientation, and allows their manager to set a timeframe for following up to see how they are fitting in.
