A New York medical power of attorney authorizes an individual to act as the health care agent for a principal and make medical decisions on their behalf. The agent’s decision-making abilities become effective after a doctor determines that the principal has lost their mental capacity. While the agent is likely to have a comprehensive understanding of the principal’s medical preferences, it may benefit the principal to further define their health care wishes in a Living Will.
