How to Register (3 Steps)
Buyers of new or used vehicles in Alabama have 20 days to register.[1] Failure to do so will result in a late registration fee.[2]
1. Gather Paperwork
The following paperwork is required to complete the registration process[3]:
- Title – The vehicle’s title signed by seller and assigned to buyer.
- Government-issued ID
- Bill of sale – Complete with all legally required info including both signatures.[4]
- Proof of Alabama liability insurance
Alabama Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – Required if the buyer will have someone else register the vehicle on their behalf.
2. Go to a Licensing Office
With the paperwork gathered, the owner can register the vehicle through the Vehicle Licensing Office in the owner’s county.[5] The following will take place at the licensing office[6]:
- The owner will apply for Certificate of Title using the assigned title and bill of sale (an application fee is required).
- A county licensing official will verify the liability insurance (or ask for proof of insurance).
- The official will complete a VIN and ownership documentation inspection.
- The owner will pay the registration fees.
