How to Register (3 steps)1. Get an Emissions Test (if applicable)If the vehicle purchased is over five years old (and a model year of 1967 or newer), the new owner must obtain an emissions test from an Emissions Testing Station.[1]
This test only applies to those residing in the greater Tucson and Phoenix areas and people who commute into those areas regularly for work or schooling. Vehicles newer than six years old are also exempt.
2. Gather DocumentsBefore a buyer can register and transfer the title into their name, they must ensure they have the following documentation[2]:
Arizona Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney (Form 48-1001) – Enables a principal to appoint a representative to handle their motor vehicle transactions.
3. Go to an MVD OfficeWithin 15 days after a purchase, the new owner must apply for a title. A new vehicle owner must bring the required documentation to a Motor Vehicles Division office location to complete the process. Registration and titling fees will apply.[4]
