Maine Vehicle Registration (4 Steps)All vehicles that will be operated on public roads must be registered with the Department of the Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles.[1]
1. Contact OfficeAll registration applications must be completed through one of 13 BMV offices in the state.
2. Excise TaxExcise tax must be paid before a registration application can be processed.[2] This tax is paid at the local municipal office where the new owner of the vehicle resides. A receipt will be provided after payment is made.
3. Registration DocumentsTo title and register a recently purchased vehicle, the following documents will be required:
Maine Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – If another individual is registering the car on behalf of the owner, a signed POA may be required. 4. ApplicationThe application form and all supporting documents must be filed at a local municipal office or the nearest BMV. Registration with the BMV can be done in person or by mail at the following address:
