Colorado Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)

Vehicle owners are required to register with the Department of Revenue (Division of Motor Vehicles) within 60 days after the purchase.[1]

1. Gather Documents

The vehicle’s owner will need to prepare for registration and title transfer by gathering the following documents[2]:

  • The vehicle title with the odometer reading and signature of the prior owner, transferring ownership to the new one.
  • Identification – Government-issued driver’s license, ID card, U.S. Passport, or another official form of identification.[3]
  • Proof of vehicle emissions (if applicable)[4]
  • Proof of insurance
  • Bill of sale – For tax reasons.[5]

2. File Documents

When the owner has all the required documentation, they may visit a County Motor Vehicle Office to title and register their vehicle. Registration must always be done in person for used vehicles.

3. Pay Fees

The new owner will be required to pay certain taxes and fees to complete the registration. Fees vary per county and are based on the weight and type of vehicle being registered.[6]
