South Dakota Vehicle Registration (3 steps)

The buyer must transfer the title to their name within 45 days of purchasing the vehicle to avoid late fees.^[1] Title transfers are required to register.

1. Prepare Application

The following forms are required to register and title a vehicle^[2]:

Application for Motor Vehicle Title & Registration (Form 1001) – Allows a motor vehicle or boat to be titled and registered.
Original Title – Requires the buyer and seller’s signatures.
Bill of Sale
Odometer Disclosure Statement (if applicable) – Required for vehicles less than 20 years old.
Identification – The buyer’s driver’s license or proof of SSN.

South Dakota Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – This document (known as “Form 1023”) enables an individual to purchase, title, and register a vehicle on behalf of the owner.

2. Submit Documents

The buyer must submit the documents to the County Treasurer’s Office. To complete the registration and titling process, they must pay the appropriate fees and excise tax.

3. Insure Vehicle

Motorists are required to obtain minimum liability insurance coverage that protects against bodily harm, property damage, and uninsured motorists.
