Delaware Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)

The below steps must be taken within 30 days of purchase.[1]

1. Transfer Title

To transfer a vehicle’s title and registration between two owners, the seller must first out the Assignment of Certificate of Title area on the back of the vehicle’s title (Section 1). The buyer and seller must both sign the title for the transfer to take place.

The seller must then complete either the Seller’s Report of Sale or the back of the Registration Card and mail it to the DMV.

2. Prepare Documents

The buyer must fill out the Purchaser’s Application on the back of the title and gather the following:

  • Bill of sale (if used)
  • Proof of liability insurance – To register a vehicle, the owner must prove that they have sufficient Delaware auto insurance coverage.[2]
  • Delaware driver’s license or two documents proving residency[3]

3. Submit Documents and Pay Fees

The buyer will take the documents in step two to their local DMV and pay the applicable fees to complete the process. The DMV recommends that both parties be present to make the transfer.
