Massachusetts Vehicle Registration (4 Steps)After purchasing a vehicle, a certificate of title must be applied for within 10 days of the purchase date in order to register.[1]
1. InsuranceTo register and title a vehicle, an Application for Registration and Title must be filled out. Before this can be filed with the Registry of Motor Vehicles, it must be submitted to a licensed Massachusetts insurance company to acquire an insurance policy. 2. Additional DocumentsIn addition to the application form, the original certificate of title signed by the previous owner must be obtained. If the title does not state the price of the sale, a bill of sale signed by both parties will be required. The previous owner’s registration and a bill of sale signed by both parties can be used instead for older vehicles.[2] Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – This document must also be completed and submitted for registration if another person is filing on behalf of the owner. 3. Submit ApplicationThe application form and supporting documents can be submitted to an RMV Service Center. A registration fee, a title fee, and sales tax must be paid before the registration certificate and plates will be delivered.[3]
4. InspectionState law requires that purchased vehicles be inspected by an Inspection Station within seven days of being registered.[4] |
