New York Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)Individuals must insure their vehicle before registering, and registration needs to be completed within 180 days from the insurance policy’s effective date.[1] The buyer is also required to apply for title within 30 days of receiving the vehicle’s Certificate of Title.[2] 1. Obtain Vehicle Title, Bill of Sale, & InsuranceThe buyer must acquire the following before they can register and title their vehicle[3]:
*If the vehicle is model year 2011 or newer and transferred within 20 years of its year of manufacture, an Odometer and Damage Disclosure Statement must be completed and signed by the seller and the new owner. 2. Complete Application Form & Book AppointmentOnce the required documentation is in hand, the buyer will need to complete the Vehicle Registration/Title Application (MV-82) form and reserve an appointment with their local DMV. New York Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – Authorizes an individual to act in the principal’s name for any vehicle-related transaction.
