Illinois Vehicle Registration (4 Steps)Following the purchase of a vehicle, the new owner has 20 days to transfer the certificate of title with the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State.[1] Vehicle registration can be completed at the same time.
1. Emissions TestBecause some vehicles require an emissions test, the owner should review the Illinois EPA Testing Program website to see if the vehicle is subject to testing.[2] 2. Application FormTo apply for registration and title, the owner must complete the Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (VSD 190) online. Otherwise, the owner can obtain a physical form from their local DMV.
3. Supporting DocumentsThe following paperwork must be gathered for submission to the DMV[3]:
Illinois Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney – This form is used when the owner has asked a representative to complete the registration on their behalf. 4. SubmissionThe owner must file the application form and supporting documents with the DMV and pay all registration and titling fees.
