North Dakota Concealed Carry

Residents of North Dakota who are 18 and older are not required to hold a permit in order to carry a concealed weapon.[2]

A Concealed Weapon License (CWL) may be obtained in North Dakota, which allows residents to carry concealed in reciprocating states. Either a Class 1 or Class 2 license may be obtained. A Class 1 license requires more testing and has reciprocity in more states than a Class 2 license.[3]

To obtain a CWL, eligible residents will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Both Class 1 and Class 2 applicants must complete a written exam from a certified test administrator.[4]
  2. Class 1 applicants must complete additional classroom training, be able to show familiarity with the weapon, and complete a shooting test.[5]
  3. Fill and print out the Online Application.[6]
  4. Gather the following documents to attach to the application:
    • Cashier’s check or money order with the application fee made payable to ND Attorney General[7]
    • Photocopy of state-issued driver’s license or ID card[8]
    • Two sets of fingerprint cards from the county sheriff’s office
    • A certified document stating the applicant has passed applicable licensing exams.
  5. Mail all documents to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) at:

BCI-CWL
PO Box 1054
Bismarck ND 58502

The BCI will inform the applicant within 60 days if their application was approved or denied.[9]
