New York Boat Registration
In New York, all boats with motors must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV also requires a certificate of title for any boat longer than 14 feet with a model year of 1987 or later.[1]
To register a newly acquired boat purchased from a private seller in New York, the buyer will have to visit the nearest DMV office and submit the following[2]:
- Boat Registration/Title Application (MV-82B)
- Certificate of Title or transferable registration
- Bill of Sale (MV 9-12)
- Valid ID
- Statement of Transaction (DTF-802)
- Payment for sales tax, registration, and titling fees
