Alabama Pistol Permit

As of January 1st, 2023, anyone at least 19 years old and legally entitled to carry a gun can conceal carry without a permit, training, or a background check.[2]

Those who wish to obtain a permit can do so through their local Sheriff’s Office (licensing procedures vary between counties).[3]

How to Apply

The following steps are generally what’s required to obtain a pistol permit[4]:

  1. File an application at the Sheriff’s Office (see sample application).
  2. Present valid identification and proof of citizenship.
  3. Pay the licensing fee.
  4. Submit a set of fingerprints.
  5. Pass a background check.
  6. Allow 30 days for the Sheriff’s Office to process the application. Notice of approval or denial will be delivered by mail.
