North Dakota Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)

1. Obtain Certificate of Title and Auto Insurance

Within 30 days of the sale, the seller is required to give the vehicle’s Certificate of Title to the buyer with the assignment section of the document completed and signed. The buyer then has 30 days to apply for a new title.[1] The buyer is also required to obtain auto insurance for their new vehicle.[2]

2. Go to DoT Office

With the title signed over to them, the buyer can go to their local Department of Transportation office with the following documentation and payment to register and transfer the certificate of title:

Once the buyer’s registration has been processed, they will be given new plates to put on their vehicle.
