A North Dakota motor vehicle bill of sale is a document that includes the details of a private vehicle transaction executed between a buyer and a private seller. The bill of sale acts as proof of purchase, providing the purchase price, vehicle information, and the contact information of both parties. State law requires individuals to pay a sales-on-use tax which is based on the purchase price found on the proof of purchase (if the purchase price is written on the vehicle title, this may be used instead of a bill of sale). Once both parties have signed, the sale is considered final.

North Dakota Vehicle Registration

Newly purchased vehicles are required to be registered in the buyer’s name before they can be driven on public roads. The buyer must first obtain the vehicle’s Certificate of Title with the assignment section of the document completed and signed by the seller. After obtaining the title, the buyer can go to their local Department of Transportation office with the following documentation and payment to register their vehicle:
