New Hampshire Vehicle Registration (5 Steps)

1. Gather Registration Documents

The following documents are required to register a vehicle in New Hampshire[1]:

  • Vehicles with a Model Year of 2000 or Newer
    • Bill of Sale
    • Certificate of Title (the transfer of ownership section on the back must be completed)
  • Vehicles with a Model Year of 1999 or Older

2. Purchase Temporary Plates (if applicable)

A 20-day license plate must be purchased at a DMV office if the owner intends to drive the vehicle before registering it in New Hampshire.[2]

3. File for Registration

Owners must bring their registration documents, along with ID and proof of residency, to a town or city clerk’s office where the following will take place:

  1. The owner will submit their paperwork and provide ID/proof of residency.
  2. The owner will pay the registration fee plus applicable taxes, after which they’ll receive their license plates.
  3. The clerk will fill out a Title Application and mail it to the DMV.

New residents must register within 60 days of moving to New Hampshire.[3]

4. Have the Vehicle Inspected

A safety inspection must be performed within 10 days of registering at the clerk’s office.[4] Additionally, vehicles less than 20 years old are required to undergo an on-board diagnostics test during the inspection process.[5]

5. Receive New Title

If all of the above steps have been completed properly, the vehicle will be officially registered in New Hampshire, and the owner can expect to receive their new title within 40 to 50 days.[6]
