A Rhode Island mechanic’s lien allows contractors to claim interest in a property for unpaid work or supplies, demanding payment from the owner. Even if the contractor (the “claimant”) was working as a subcontractor and is owed by the general contractor, the claim will be made against the property owner. Once the lien document (called a “notice of intention”) has been filed with the land records office, it becomes public record and will deter potential property buyers and lenders. To remove the lien, the property owner will be required to see that the balance is paid.

A copy of the mechanic’s lien must be mailed to the property owner with return receipt requested or it will be considered invalid.
