An Iowa roommate agreement is used to bind a group of roommates to a set of duties and regulations that must be observed while sharing a leased property. Unlike a lease agreement, the roommate contract does not involve the landlord and is only executed by the roommates. The primary purpose of the document is to establish the division of rent, cleaning duties, and bills between all parties. Rules for behavior should also be included to regulate quiet hours, smoking, pets, common areas, and overnight guests. Having a written agreement holds all parties accountable for paying their fair share of rent and expenses, as well as respecting their roommates and residence.
