Alabama Boat Registration
New owners have 15 days to transfer a used boat’s registration under their name.[1]
Applications for transfer can be completed as follows:
- Locate the local Vehicle Licensing Office or Probate Office.
- Bring the following documents:
- Original signed bill of sale
- Copy of the most recent registration
- Certificate of title signed by previous owner if available (see below)
- Completed Application for Boat Registration.
- Pay sales tax and registration fee (varies by county and boat length).
Alabama Boat Title
As of January 1st, 2024, the following vessels must be titled[2]:
- Vessels built after December 31st, 2023
- Vessels that will be used principally in Alabama on or after January 1st, 2024
- Vessels that are less than 18 feet long and propelled by an engine that’s 75HP or greater
Some exceptions apply, including barges and documented vessels.[3]
Satisfactory proof of ownership is required when applying for a certificate of title, which could include the previous owner’s certificate of title signed over, the certificate of origin, or the bill of sale.
