North Carolina Vehicle Registration (3 Steps)

In North Carolina, residents must apply to register and title newly-purchased vehicles.[1] The vehicle buyer must apply for a Certificate of Title within 28 days of the transfer to avoid paying late fees.[2]
 

1. Obtain Vehicle Title & Insurance

Before the vehicle can be registered, the buyer will need to obtain the vehicle’s current Certificate of Title with the assignment portion filled out, including the seller’s notarized signature.[3]

The new owner will also need to obtain liability insurance before the DMV will allow registration.[4]

2. Apply for Title & Registration at DMV

Once the title has been transferred to the buyer, they must complete and bring the following to their local DMV office to apply for title and registration[5]:
