Illinois Boat Registration
All boats that have a motor must be registered in Illinois.[1] Registered boats with a length exceeding 21 feet must be titled.[2]
Registration and/or titling must be accomplished within 15 days of the purchase date.[3]
To transfer ownership to their name, the buyer can apply by mail or use the online ExploreMoreIL application system and mail supporting documents to the IDNR. Note that in-person registration is not available.
The owner will need the following documentation[4]:
- Watercraft Registration/Title Application – Printed and completed if applying via mail only.
- Original title and registration card
- Bill of sale
- Illinois Department of Revenue (ST-556, RUT-25 or RUT-75) tax form
- Check or money order for the applicable fees or a copy of the verification page if filing online.
The documents must be scanned and uploaded to the website if filing online. In all cases, they will need to be sent to the following address:
Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources – IDNR Headquarters
