Maine power of attorney forms are documents that individuals can use to appoint authority to an agent to execute certain documents, make decisions, or conduct transactions in their name. The person for whom the contract is made (called the “principal”) decides the scope of the authority and has the ability to amend or revoke it at any time. One common purpose for powers of attorney is to appoint a financial and/or healthcare agent who can manage the principal’s finances and healthcare decisions if they are incapacitated. Short-term contracts are often used for the transfer of ownership of a vehicle or real estate that is administered by the agent.

Advance Directive – Serves the dual purpose of recording the principal’s wishes regarding medical treatments if they are incapacitated, as well as appointing an agent to make health care decisions on their behalf.

Durable Power of Attorney – A durable power of attorney gives a financial agent the ability to represent the principal in making decisions related to finances, assets, business, and property, even in the event of the principal’s incapacity.

General (non-durable) Power of Attorney – This contract is used to appoint a financial agent who can be given such powers as managing bank accounts, overseeing business operations, and paying expenses on the principal’s behalf.

Limited Power of Attorney – Often used for financial purposes, however, unlike the general power of attorney, this type of power of attorney is drafted to authorize a specific task and often expires once the action has been completed.

Motor Vehicle (BMV) Power of Attorney – Gives a third party the authority to transfer or register a vehicle title in the principal’s name and expires when the transaction is complete.

Minor (Child) Power of Attorney – Used by parents to assign a temporary guardian who will be given parental rights for their child(ren).

Real Estate Power of Attorney – Allows an agent to purchase, sell, or manage property on the principal’s behalf.
